How to play a wet bunker shot

view all articles

Playing on the Golf Course after a big down pour presents all kinds of challenges to your short game. Green side bunkers can become a tricky place in from which to play. The sand becomes hard and more compact making it feel more like playing off a buggy path.

Here are a few tips to help you tackle this shot over the winter months.

Top Tips

When addressing the ball keep the club face square.  Try to avoid opening the club face too much as you would with a standard green side bunker shot. In the wet conditions the club will bounce off the hard compact sand as if it’s been played from cement.

Aim to use a wedge which has little or no bounce.

Place most of the weight on the front foot to help create a steeper downswing. Keep the weight here throughout.

Position the ball just forward of center in the stance.

Aim for a spot about an inch behind the ball (rather than the standard two inches), then swing to hit the spot. Make sure to accelerate the club through impact.

Plan for the ball to come out faster, carry further and stop more quickly than from dry sand.
