How to stop hitting fat and heavy golf shots

view all articles

Want to stop hitting heavy golf shots? Do you lose distance and control by making contact with the ground before you hit the golf ball? A few changes may help you to become a better ball striker.

Fat or heavy shots come from having an early and incorrect point of contact between the club, ball and ground. Top ball strikers aim brush the ground after impact taking a slight divot helping them to get the sweet spot of the club up against the ball. Aim to get the bottom of your swing arc forward at impact. Most players believe this to be at the back of the ball. New technology has now shown that it is actually 3 inches in front.

Key points at Impact –

The low part of the swing arc is past the ball.

The shaft gets into a vertical position after the ball is struck, not on top of the ball. This helps to get the clubhead lower after the ball achieving the desired position. The hands also get past the ball before the club makes contact.

Drill Time –

Place an alignment stick in the ground vertically in front of you.  Practice making swings where your hands are ahead of the ball and the stick as they come into impact. This will help to promote the feeling of getting the bottom of your swing arc forward, striking the ball first and then the ground.

Give it a try…..
